Prayers for Deacon

So, those of you who know Gary and I well know that we actually have four sons. We of course have Alex and Evan, and we also have Deacon (our 11 year old white german shepard) and Cricket (our 9 year old chihuahua).

Long story short, Deacon is very sick. We took him in to the vet on Monday expecting to get a round of antibiotics and found out that he has an extremely large mass in his abdomen. He apparently has a large mass/tumor on his prostate, which is very rare in a neutered male dog. The vet basically gave us no hope at all and told us that we probably only had a few days left.

Gary and I just couldn't accept that answer. How in the world did this happen? Our dog who has been perfectly healthy all the sudden is only going to live a few days? Deacon is still running around the back yard, eating, drinking, and seems to be in no pain. So, we took him to another vet in town who did a sonogram, yes a sonogram, on Deacon. Sure enough, he has a mass which is causing several problems for him such as swelling in his hind legs from circulation issues. This vet however put him on some medicine to shrink the tumor. He said that if Deacon responds well he could live a normal and comfortable life for six months to a year.

So, we are hoping that he responds well to the medication. Of course, his comfort is our greatest concern. We would never let him be in pain. In the words of the vet, "he is oblivious to what is going on and is not in any pain at all right now."

I am sure that some of you think we are crazy. Believe me, I know he is a dog, but I also know that God created all creatures great and small. So, if you think about it, say a little prayer for Deac! After all, he is our first baby.

  1. I'm so sorry! This is terrible. We recently lost Toby, my parent's dog. It was very sudden. I will pray for Deacon...

  3. We are so sorry and will keep Deacon in our prayers. We lost our dog Baby when Nolan was just a few months old and it was so hard. They are part of the family. Evan is growing so fast, such a happy baby! We need to get together again soon...maybe for March Madness?:)
